Tommy Guerrero – A Little Bit Of Somethin’
Tuesday, November 21st, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Tommy Guerrero – A Little Bit Of Somethin’ It’s rare that a certain sound is entirely an artist’s own. Although undeniably a stew of impeccable influences – from blues to folk to Latin to dusty funk, soul and hip-hop – one cannot hear a Tommy Guerrero song without immediately recognising it as his – and his only.
The cult skater from San Francisco is globally renowned as one of the original members of the legendary “Bones Brigade” team. And as an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, his laid-back soul is beloved by all who’ve basked in its blissful glow.
There’s something elemental about this music that really stirs the soul. Strikingly beautiful and instantly addictive, it’s a kind of funk-fuelled, melody-driven, groove-based magic. There’s a serenity and heart in the playing that radiates warmth and splendour, as if crafted for endless sunsets. His albums that surfaced on Mo Wax at the turn of the century have been treasured since their release and it’s two of his most vital LPs that we’re honoured to reintroduce.
The originals were quietly pressed on to a single piece of vinyl so we’ve worked closely with Tommy this year to bring you these fresh, limited editions. They have been lovingly remastered, cut nice and loud on to heavyweight double vinyl and presented in deluxe gatefold jackets.
A Little Bit Of Somethin’ is a quietly majestic gem. Brimming with Guerrero’s horizontal “loose grooves”, these brief but innovative instrumentals demonstrate a rich variety and, as such, comprise an LP that is aptly titled. An enchanting start-to-finish listen, it was instantly regarded as essential upon release via Mo Wax in 2000. It has aged remarkably well.
Throughout this inspired collection, simplicity is key. In deploying it, Guerrero presents a beautifully crafted melodic soundscape. The distinctive, mellifluous approach of his guitar style, blending Brazilian, Cuban, Mexican, soul and jazz motifs, is at once startlingly new and tantalisingly familiar. Set against unrushed percussion, the music releases a crystal clear stream of healing frequencies to create a fragile, hypnotic atmosphere.
Each track clocks in at around three minutes and, with a lack of studio polish or commitment to traditional song structure, it’s a wonder how this enigmatic record demands your attention. However, through its gentle dynamism and impressive playing, it does just that. Whilst resolutely low-key, this lo-fi aesthetic feels genuinely organic and remarkably personal, its powerful intimacy truly connects. It’s what makes this album so beloved of those lucky enough to be already familiar with it. From Margaret Kilgallen’s truly iconic cover artwork to the music contained within, it’s all brilliantly effortless.
Guerrero’s musical ideas are consistently compelling throughout, making it impossible to select highlights. The album’s laconic drift touches upon jazz-fusion workouts and slow-mo hip-hop drums, Tortoise-style experimental post-rock and cinematic sound textures. It’s at once hazy, light and bouncy yet sombre and bluesy. The Latin soul of El Chicano blends with the breezy jazz of Grant Green. By employing guitars and drum machines to create a stripped down rhythmic tapestry of spellbinding, addictive songs, there are even traces of The Durutti Column. A little bit of country, a little bit of rock & roll. A Little Bit Of Somethin’, indeed.

Black Moon – Enta Da Stage (2017 Remaster)
Thursday, October 5th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Black Moon – Enta Da Stage (2017 Remaster) Composed of members Buckshot, 5ft, and DJ Evil Dee, Black Moon simultaneously kicked off and defned the rap renaissance of New York with the release of Enta Da Stage in 1993. Whereas plenty of earlier groups had spit rage-flled rhymes to tear down the world’s unjust establishments, no one had evoked brooding pathos or introspective anger quite like Black Moon. Underground hip-hop might have been dominated by the sunny sound of G-Funk when Enta Da Stage dropped, but from then on the scene turned to the dark side. Black Moon was rising. Earlier this year, Fat Beats Records presented the defnitive Enta Da Stage box set, which was reissued for the frst time across three formats (6xLP, 3xCD and 3xCassette). This album is the complete encapsulation of an era for anyone seeking to understand the origin and the essence of New York’s Golden Age.The box set included vocals, instrumentals and remixes plus extensive liner notes by David Ma (Pitchfork, Wax Poetics) with rare and unreleased visual ephemera in an 18 page booklet. The story of Black Moon, alongside their peers Biggie, Big L, Nas, Kool G Rap, and Wu Tang, reminds us that the bleakest times produce the most profound agents of cultural change. And as we stand at the precipice of a new age of anxiety, Enta Da Stage has never been more relevant… or more necessary.
Although Black Moon would go on to release three more albums – and its members would go on to greatness with Da Beatminerz, Boot Camp Klik, and various solo projects – Enta Da Stage remains the perfect distillation of tight lyrical menace, rowdy crew hooks, stripped down breaks, and deep basslines on all of its fourteen tracks. Although Enta Da Stage might stand in the shadow of East Coast albums such as Enter the WuTang (36 Chambers), Illmatic, Liquid Swords, Ready to Die, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, and The Infamous, history will remember that Enta Da Stage
preceded those releases. To understand Enta Da Stage is to understand the origin and the spirit of New York hip-hop once and for all.

MC’s Buckshot and 5 Ft. shine on the mic, exuding supreme confdence through their brash delivery and charisma, while on the musical side, DJ Evil Dee and Mr. Walt make their mark with their distinctively jazzy yet grimy lo-f production as Da Beatminerz
• Making their production debut with Enta Da Stage, Da Beatminerz went on to produce the equally classic debuts from Boot Camp Clik members Smif-N-Wessun, Heltah Skeltah, & O.G.C. with Dah Shinin’, Nocturnal & Da Storm, solidifying themselves as one the preeminent production teams of the era Available from 06.10.2017

Paul Bley Trio – Closer

3. Closer 3:28
4. Sideways in Mexico 2:56

2. Figfoot 3:23
3. Crossroads 2:31
4. Violin 2:57
5. Cartoon 2:16
Personnel:
Paul Bley, piano, Steve Swallow, bass, Barry Altschul, percussion
Overview:
When Oscar Peterson moved from Montreal to New York in 1949, then-17-year-old Bley took over Peterson’s residency at the
Alberta Lounge on Oscar’s recommendation, in his twenties, Bley played with Charlie Parker. Bley incorporated maverick
pianist Lennie Tristano’s approach to improvisation and collaborated with Charles Mingus, and in 1958 in Los Angeles
famously put together a band with Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, and Billy Higgins. His move into free
improvisation in the groundbreaking Jimmy Giuffre 3 brought him acclaim. After moving to New York, he was one of the
performers at the Cellar Café in Bill Dixon’s “October Revolution in Jazz” four-day festival, which led to Bley being one of the
co-founders shortly thereafter of the Jazz Composers Guild. It was in the midst of that fabled month that Bley recorded his
first LP for ESP-Disk’ (sixth overall to that point), Barrage. Bley returned to the studio for his second ESP-Disk’ LP a bit less than
two months later. Closer finds Bley again heavily featuring then-wife Carla’s compositions, she’s credited on seven of the ten
tracks, including two also heard on Barrage, “Batterie” and “And Now the Queen.” They sound quite different on this quieter
trio date, and the performances are more concise (no track tops the 3:30 mark). Paul included one of his own tunes, “Figfoot,”
as well as Ornette Coleman’s “Crossroads” and future wife Annette Peacock’s “Cartoon.” Closer features the distinctive
pianism we’ve come to associate with Bley in one of its earliest recorded manifestations. The other players are fellow Jimmy
Giuffre 3 member Swallow and, in his recording debut, Altschul.
Press Quotes:
“The interplay between these three is startling in how tightly woven they are melodically and harmonically.” – Thom Jurek, All
Music Guide
“In the final analysis, however, it is his vision that propels the music forward. He fills it with vigor and dynamism, with space
and lyricism, nothing is out of focus, every challenge is within his grasp. His eloquence is shaped by his ability to balance
silence with sound, as well as his penchant for, and skill with, unusual phrasing.” – Jerry D’Souza, All About Jazz
“…a wonderful, poetic anomaly. In an era where velocity and raw story-telling were required currency, Closer had a lyrical,
Haiku-like simplicity — recalling the Japanese poet Basho’s line ‘something like a hidden glimmering.’ […] In Bley’s hands the
freedom of jazz manifests itself in the negotiating of borders and edges, between skittering, conversational interplay, serene
space and the heart-strained melodic intimacy on the part of his bandmates ” – Matt Fleeger, The New Thing, KMHD-FM Available from 06.10.2017

Lanzo – Omnipotent
Friday, August 4th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Lanzo – Omnipotent Chicago’s Carington Pierre, also known as Lanzo, has bestowed
evidence of his cosmic hip hop beatology to the Cold Busted label in
the form of a new album, Omnipotent. Previously recording for BLVNT
Records and the Natural Selection label, Lanzo specializes in a style of
experimental hip hop that draws from boom-bap, soulful downtempo, and
atmospheres that lean toward the celestial. Lanzo and his trusty MPC
1000 have been actively producing since 2008 and Omnipotent confrms
his upward trajectory, presenting ffteen tasty sonic morsels that groove
in a confdent but abstract fashion.
Highlights include “Comfort Zone” which envelopes a swinging rhythm
in dreamy strings, distant voices, and rolling bass, and the odd but
appealing “Gutter Balls”, featuring some deliciously drunken synths.
There’s also the melancholy quiet storm of “Colours”, “Against The
Wall” and its heavily processed beat magic, and the loping sci-f jazz
of “Between Friends”. Omnipotent is a heady listen, displaying textures
and swirls that accentuate the sturdiness of its drum beats. Lanzo has
provided a distinctive soundtrack that’s ready-made for day blazing or
night groovin’.

along with its Bassist Shigeki Umezawa and Keyboardist Daisuke Takeuchi.
Their distinctive style, which can be summarized as the modern rare groove,
embodies a mixture of jazz, funk, disco, soul and even hip hop. The conception of
NAUTILUS is drawn not only from the composition “Nautilus” written by Bob
James, but also from an American submarine that actually existed, thus
resembling their contemporary style that carries on the rare groove music of the
70s in an abyssal imagery.
Sasaki’s versatile, yet solid drumming combined with Umezawa’s full- bodied,
powerful bass and Takeuchi’s classically-trained prowess produces an
exceptional sound unique all on its own.

Globally renowned for his vibrant, melodic sets and
productions, Brasil’s DJ Marky has been playing records
for over a quarter of a century, making his debut at the
tender age of twelve (yes, really). In the late 90’s,
Marky’s fresh energy and eclectic influences provided a
much-needed tonic for the UK’s Drum & Bass scene, his
sun-drenched crossover anthem ‘LK’ eventually entering
the UK Top 20 in 2002. The intervening years have been
spent spinning records all over the world to rapt
audiences, as well as absorbing more and more wideranging global sounds to add to his distinctive style.
Marky’s long awaited debut album finally dropped in
2015, aptly titled ‘My Heroes’, reflecting this
uncommonly humble artist’s habit of constantly
championing his favourite musicians and musical
inspirations. With this unselfish spirit firmly in mind, we
are proud to announce the release of ‘Influences’, a
compilation album and DJ mix showcasing a selection of
Marky’s favourite music, created with a healthy disdain
for genre-puritans and an emphasis on fun. Taking in
traditional Brazilian music, disco, acid jazz, early house
and of course a little Drum & Bass, ‘Influences’ is more of
an invitation to a barbecue in the São Paulo sunshine
than a chin-stroking ‘back to mine’ selection. Few artists
display the ability (or the will) to transcend the genre in
which they most thrive, but Marky is quickly establishing
himself as a powerful tastemaker, perhaps even South
America’s answer to Gilles Peterson or Laurent Garnier.
Fans will revel in the acid house and latin rhythms which
provide much of the DNA of his Drum N Bass stylings,
while casual listeners will simply discover a seamless
music journey through a breathtaking number of eras
and styles. A music-lover and fan first and foremost,
Marky’s infectious enthusiasm for his craft has never
been more evident than on this very special record.
For fans of: Goldie, Gilles Peterson, DJ Spinna, LTJ
Bukem, Boiler Room, Jamie Cullum, Annie Mac, Fabric.
Key selling points:
? DJ Marky has headlined Lovebox Festival in
Victoria Park London & was a special guest playing
at Norman Jay MBE’s “Good Times Sound System”
at Notting Hill Carnival, in 2012
? Some of Marky’s songs can be found on the video
game, FIFA Street 2.

It’s the utmost honor for Sonar Kollektiv to be in the position to introduce “Ankhor”, the brand
new album by Liz Aku. Having recorded all sorts of music with different outfits as well as
solo projects over the last fifteen years the Belgian soul singer and highly gifted songwriter
definitely earned her stripes and is anything but a newcomer to this game. She seems to
have found her own, distinctive voice, after traveling to New Zealand and a far-reaching
encounter with Mara TK from Electric Wire Hustle.
With “Ankhor” (a combination of the Egyptian symbol for eternal life “Ankh” and “anchor”)
Aku accomplished a masterpiece of Nu Soul, Jazz and Pop, which will make her join the upper
league of the players on the scene. For this cause, several allies and befriended producers
have helped her out. With Mara TK leading the way obviously, who co-produced three out of
the album’s twelve songs. On “Breathing Underwater” and the sublime, for the whole album
groove defining opening song “The Drum Major Instinct” the native New Zealander duets
with Aku.
Further collaborators on “Ankhor” are for instance the Hip-hop rooted Canadian producer duo
Potatohead People. Their 2015 track “Blue Charms” is purified by Liz Aku’s voice and becomes
“Seasons Change”. Also built on a sample (“Waters” by Electric Wire Hustle) is the bass heavy
and lasciviously lolling “Deceive The Mind”. The Rotterdam based beatsmith Maximoe is
responsible for this co-production, as well as for the piano looping “Hunger”. For “Just What I
Need”, one of the most sophisticated pieces of the album, Aku drummed up a whole band
with the Belgian top drummer Lander Gyselinck, Jazz pianist Bram Weijters, bass player Juan
Manssens and trumpet player Bart Maris. Bart Vincent and Serge Hertoge produced this
song, as well as “Ashamed”. Both are two companions from Aku’s home country. Also at
home in Belgium, in Ghent to be exact, is the female rapper Zulu Moon, who delivers on the
title song “Ankhor” an outstanding rap that blends perfectly with Liz’s spoken word
performance in the vein of Ursula Rucker or Me’Shell NdegéOcello.
The Brussel based producer Morshmellow adopts a quieter tone for this track and creates
together with his two compatriots a mood which is present all over the whole album: A
positive confidence, a brave outlook in times of unrest, an assertive statement to believe in
oneself and of course lots of feeling, or more precisely, soul. And if soul music 2017 has to
sound like something, then it should sound exactly like this. Thanks, Liz Aku.
All tracks published by Copyright Control.
All tracks produced by Liz Aku & Mara TK, except for “Just What I Need” & “Ashamed”.
Mixed by Benny Tones.
All songs recorded in Belgium & New Zealand.

Wednesday, March 8th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Sunny & The Sunliners – Should I Take You Home/My Dream Big Crown Records is proud to present this killer two sider reissue from Sunny & The Sunliners.
Sunny Ozuna, who formed his band, Sunny & The Sunliners, in the early 60’s, is a true legend in the history of not just Chicano music, but American music. Sunny “Mr. Brown Eyed Soul” Ozuna is highly regarded as one of the architects of the sweet soul sound that has been comped on countless “Lowrider Oldies” collections, and his music has been pouring out of 1964 Chevy Impalas since, well, 1964. Side A’s “Should I Take You Home” is one of his flagship tunes that embodies everything that makes Sunny’s music so appealing. A mid tempo masterpiece that is as cool and swaggy as it is sweet and innocent. In his honeyed voice, that’s equal parts Little Wille John and Frank Sinatra, Sunny tells the tale of young love and it’s inherent defiance with lines like “there’s no excuse that she would understand, so when I take you home hold me by the hand”. When we asked Sunny about the tune he described it as “a very young thing, a cute thing”. There is undoubtedly something equal parts nostalgic and romantic about a young man puffing his chest out to authority for the love of his girl. It’s this blend of doo wop styled lyrics, B side soul ballad aesthetic, and Tejano vibes that makes this one of the biggest Chicano penned low rider tunes out there.
Side B finds Sunny covering the Harvey Averne Classic “My Dream”. It’s another perfect example of the distinctive blend of Tejano music and American soul that makes Sunny & The Sunliners so unique.
To say we are obsessed with the music of Sunny & The Sunliners would be to put it lightly. We have been working on a proper reissue project focusing on the for their music for a few years now and the full compilation will be out in 2017. Available from 31.03.2017

Joey Negro Presents – Electro
Friday, January 6th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Joey Negro Presents – Electro Z Records are back in the funk hot-seat, but this time Joey Negro presents a snapshot of the edgier, robotic sounds of the emerging early 80s Electro scene
Record One
A1 Hashim – Al Naafiysh (The Soul)
A2 Aleem – Release Yourself (Dub)
B1 Kosmic Light Force – Mysterious Waves
B2 Paul Hardcastle – Rain Forest
Record Two
C1 The Russell Brothers – The Party Scene
C2 Dwayne Omarr – This Party’s Jam Packed
D1 G-Force – Feel The Force
D2 Tyrone Brunson – The Smurf
2016 was another strong year for ZR as it continued its commitment to high quality compilation releases with Joey
Negro’s hugely successful Remixed With Love Vol.2 album topping charts everywhere and receiving across the
board DJ and Radio support. There was also the 5th instalment of the ever-popular Under The Influence series which
saw long time ZR album co-compiler Sean P select some of his long held secret weapons.
For 2017 Z Records will be back in the funk hot-seat, but this time Joey Negro presents a snapshot of the edgier,
robotic sounds of the emerging early 80s Electro scene. From stone-cold classics such as Hashim’s ‘Al Naafiysh (The
Soul)’, Tyrone Brunson’s ‘The Smurf’ and Key-Matic’s ‘Breakin’ In Space’ to revered party anthem’s such as
Aleem’s ‘Release Yourself (Dub)’, Two Sisters ‘High Noon (Part 2)’ and Dwayne Omarr’s ‘This Party’s Jam Packed’ to
electro oddities like Paul Hardcastle’s ‘Rain Forest’ and The Packman’s ‘I’m The Packman’ we get a genuine labour of
love and a timely reminder of the raw drum machine sounds that were soon to define the beginning of the house
and techno scenes we have today.
The album features extensive sleeves notes written by early electro pioneer and DJ Greg Wilson who remembers the
time as, “during the early-mid ‘80s electro-funk became the dominant force on the UK’s black music scene. With the
previous era’s jazz-funk movement running out of steam the way was clear for this new technological direction to
sweep out the old and announce a new wave of dance music with a distinctive futuristic edge.”
People maybe associate Dave Lee (Joey Negro) with disco, funk and boogie more than electro but the truth is, he is
a music fan first and foremost. Back in 82/83/84 Dave was fanatical about this futuristic new style of dance music
called electro. Although at the time this new sound remained very divisive within the soul and jazz-funk scenes, he
liked both Lonnie Liston Smith and Man Parrish.
As Dave recalls in his own album sleeve notes: “I can see why the soul boys hated electro as it lacked the soaring
vocals, intricate orchestration and polished organic production of jazz funk. Unfortunately for the purists by the mid
80s all dance music had become more electronic with the likes of Roland introducing powerful drum machines and
affordable synthesizers, not to mention the onset of early samplers. Many straight up soul boogie records got electrofied, complete with rapped sections and scratching – not to say it was an improvement, just stating a fact.”
Anyway this isn’t THE definitive electro album, it’s some of Joey Negro’s favourites, plus a few lesser-known and
collectable cuts. However that being said we do think it’s one of the best electro comps ever released! Available from 17.02.2017

Laraaji – Celestial Vibration
Wednesday, January 4th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Laraaji – Celestial Vibration This is the stunning debut album from Laraaji. ‘Celestial Vibration’ was originally released in 1978 under the name Edward Larry Gordon, and then first issued by Soul Jazz Records/Universal Sound in 2010.
Soul Jazz Records are now issuing this hypnotic piece newly re-mastered album once again in a very limited vinyl edition of 1000 and new CD as a full Laraaji release.
‘Celestial Vibration’ is a cosmic journey sounding unlike anything else when it was first released in 1978. Laraaji’s album was first issued in New York as a private-pressing record with only very minimal distribution. His distinctive use of the harp-like open-stringed zither and kalimba creates a hypnotic trance like musical landscape.
Laraaji first came to fame in the 1980s as a worldwide ambient artist working with Brian Eno on EG Records. At this time Laraaji worked with a wide range of experimental musicians – Jon Hassell, Harold Budd, Michael Brook, Bill Nelson, Roger Eno, Nana Vasconcelos and Bill Laswell.
Since Soul Jazz Records/Universal Sound first released ‘Celestial Vibration’ seven years ago (now long deleted), Laraaji’s career has had a renaissance, releasing a string of new albums including a fascinating collaboration with Blues Control for the FRKYWS label, as well as reissues of earlier albums including a three-album cassette only release last year.
Today Gordon continues his unique musical and spiritual path – performing his music mainly for meditation at yoga global retreats. He runs his own ‘Therapeutic Laughter Workshop’ where he coaches people in the mindful use of laughing for its health benefits.
Limited-edition deluxe vinyl edition.

Clock Opera – Venn

03 – Closer
04 – Whippoorwill
05 – Hear My Prayer
06 – Ready Or Not
07 – Dervish
08 – Cat’s Eye

Clock Opera began with Guy Connelly, a London, England-based multiinstrumentalist whose soaring, emotionally naked voice recalled the likes of Paul
Buchanan (the Blue Nile), Billy Mackenzie (Associates), and Antony Hegarty
(Antony & the Johnsons) without being quite as extreme as the latter two
vocalists.
After forming a live band with Che Albrighton (drums, samples), Dan Armstrong
(keyboards, samples), and Andrew West (bass, guitar,
keyboards), Clock Opera released their first single in 2009 with the “White Noise”
7” on Puregroove. Further singles followed in 2010, including “Once and for All,”
on Kitsuné. The same year, Connelly remixed the Phenomenal Handclap Band’s
“Baby,” Marina & the Diamonds’ “I Am Not a Robot,” the Drums’ “Me and the
Moon,” and Au Revoir Simone’s “Tell Me.” In 2011, the band’s reputation
continued grow, releasing the infectious “Belongings,” single on Moshi Moshi
Records. Further remixes followed for Metronomy, Feist, Everything Everything
and Charlotte Gainsbourg.
Following extensive touring (with Alt-J, Metronomy, Django Django, Maximo
Park), Clock Opera released their debut album ‘Ways To Forget’ on Island/Moshi
Moshi Records in April 2012. The Sunday Times called it “one of the indisputable
masterpieces of British pop in 2012….rare sonic ambition and scope”. Clash
Magazine said “a bar-raiser – an album of intelligent synth pop bubbling with
humanity. nAt the end of worldwide touring in late 2013, the band began to write
the follow up to Ways To Forget.
In 2014, keyboardist Dan Armstrong left to pursue his own music. Following
completion of recording the second album, multi-instrumentalist Nic Nell (who
also performs as Casually Here) joined in late-2015.
Following comeback singles ‘Changeling’ and ‘In Memory’, Clock Opera are to
release their second album ‘Venn’ on February 10th 2017.
Co-produced with Kristofer Harris (Bear’s Den, Matthew & The Atlas) at
Squarehead Studios, Kent, it’s a darker beast than their debut. The distinctive
sound of Clock Opera— the agile alto voices, a sleek and supple rhythm section,
immaculate production — is still present, but there’s a marked shift in lyrical tone. Available from 10.02.2017

G. Coscia & Formini – B85
Thursday, December 1st, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on G. Coscia & Formini – B85 Fonit’s “B 85”, part of the legendary Serie Usignolo, which bears the signatures of the mysterious Coscia (perhaps a moniker of accordionist Gianni?) and Formini, is another cult library music release: an orchestral pop record whose tracks are curiously recommended to accompany ‘viewings of vast parks, footage of agriculture, ads, moving crowds and congested traffic jams, American working-class districts’ with hilarious titles such as “Dayda”, “Schizzo”, “Palmas”, “Murlak” (which casts an incredible fuzz guitar), “Bronx” and “Ciresa Facaud”. In two words: a must!
Although library music has always had the purpose of accompanying TV and radio shows, documentaries and TV news, it is difficult to track down most of these masterpieces composed by some of the greatest composers of those years. Anonymity is one of the distinctive traits of this music genre, being in most cases difficult, if not impossible, to find out where these tracks had been used. The liner notes of these works often spark the reader’s curiosity: the notes are in fact detailed descriptions of the instruments used and the atmospheres the music aimed to reproduce. Fonit’s “B 85”, part of the legendary Serie Usignolo, which bears the signatures of the mysterious Coscia (perhaps a moniker of accordionist Gianni?) and Formini, makes no difference in that sense.
It is absolutely brilliant to read how these tracks are highly recommended to accompany ‘viewings of vast parks, footage of agriculture, ads, moving crowds and congested traffic jams, American working- class districts’ with hilarious titles such as “Dayda”, “Schizzo”, “Palmas”, “Murlak” (which casts an incredible fuzz guitar), “Bronx” and “Ciresa Facaud” (the latter a probable homage to Piedmont’s dialect that potentially translates in “Cherry, it’s hot!”). The music can be labelled as ‘orchestral pop’, to use terms that made Italian Library music worldwide famous. No hints of ‘country’ as the title seemed to suggest…

Quays – Swoo EP
Saturday, September 24th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Quays – Swoo EP Brand new R&S division Chewy Motto fly the nest with a beautiful lo-fi left-sided beat soul set from mysterious transatlantic troupe Quays. Armed with a dreamy sense of melody and a sci-fi sense of soul, Quays lay down four distinctive chapters: “Falling Down On Me” a space-aged future soul serenade and trippy time signatures, “By Your Side” flips and flops with a wavy waft of The Orient while “Stay With Me” takes more of a house route with its persistent kicks and Jamie xx-style taste for star-lit adventure. “Out Cold” closes on a stark, angular reconstruction of UKG elements. Danish producer Uffe Christensen returns to Tartelet Records with
his second LP ‘No!’, a deeply personal LP to follow 2015’s
unanimously unfuckwithable debut ‘Radio Days’. Every bit as
abundant as his first, it’s a record that scales polyrhythmic
percussion, improvised jazz, & billowing ballads. This, that and so
much more, it’s a triumph of one man’s instinctive ear –– and
should be consumed in one sitting.
A year after his dynamic debut ‘Radio Days’, Uffe resurfaces on Tartelet
with a record cut in the same spirit as the last: a borderless approach to
music-making with organic instrumentation at its heart. Genres collide
peaceably ––off-beat soul with jazz, hip-hop with the heft of house––
and are melded smooth with an earthy warmth. Like nearly all at camp
Tartelet, he’s a producer who is more interested in cutting loose than
playing to the tune of dominant modes in dance music. In that, his
album’s title is instructive: a ‘no’ to the tyranny of trends, to slavish
Facebook likes, to creative compromise. Beyond the babble of fleeting
fads, Uffe enjoys his place on the perimeter –– an outlier searching
critically for something closer to a timeless groove.
Uffe has all of the intuition of the self-taught instrumentalist, following
his ear into unexpected rhythmic and tonal combinations. It’s what gives
the album its urgent appeal: the sound of tentative experiments being
made live, of sequences improvised amongst friends. Far from a churn
of simple floor fodder, the album is a journey through a
consummate narrative. Shy guitar interlude ‘Fridge Magnet Radio
Theme’ feels its way out of the warbling jazz breakdown in ‘Lesser
Known Values’. ‘The Fact’, an unexpected vocal ballad, follows the
broken beat of ‘Solo, So Loud’. With the record’s pleading closer ‘From
Me’, it’s a story with a start, middle, and end. A long player as long
players should be.
As Tartelet continue their run of consistently solid EPs & 12″s, it’s still
these album moments that remain the best gateways into the label’s
distinctive sound. Alongside Max Graef’s debut ‘Rivers of the Red
Planet’ and Glenn Astro’s ‘Throwback’, Uffe’s ‘No’ is a mirror to the
Tartelet spirit and sits amongst the imprint’s best. For lovers of the true
album –– the full-length proper, the one-take listen –– this one’s for you.

The Seshen – Flames & Figures (Coloured LP+MP3)
Friday, September 2nd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Seshen – Flames & Figures (Coloured LP+MP3) ‘Flames & Figures’ is the second full-length album from The Seshen, whose forward-thinking sound combines synthesizers, drum machines, live percussion and entrancing harmonies for an unmistakable fusion of R&B, synth-pop and electronic music. The long player sees the band on the cusp of a new era, two years in the making, the album marks an evolution in The Seshen’s unique sound.
Full of bright synth swells, infectious bass lines and thumping 808 beats, their music is a counterpoint to lead singer Lalin St. Juste’s lyrical stream of consciousness, ‘Flames & Figures’ explores themes of femininity, power, illusion and loss as she draws on both her personal experiences and the world of her imagination.
The San Francisco Bay Area-based seven-piece are led by Lalin St. Juste and bassist/producer Akiyoshi Ehara. The duo is joined by five remarkable bandmates to create their multidimensional music: vocalist Kasha Rockland, drummer Chris Thalmann, keyboard/synth player Mahesh Rao, percussionist Mirza Kopelman, and sampler Kumar Butler. Through their much-talked-about live shows, and three releases to date (2012’s self-released, eponymous debut LP, and the ‘Unravel’ and ‘Unravel Remixes’ EPs on Tru Thoughts), their distinctive music has gained support from the likes of Lauren Laverne, Steve Lamacq, Don Letts and Tom Ravenscroft (BBC 6Music), Jason Bentley (KCRW/NPR), OkayPlayer, Earmilk, The Line of Best Fit and Clash.

Milo – So The Flies Don’t Come
Saturday, August 27th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Milo – So The Flies Don’t Come With the clarity of a lucid dream, Milo’s new album So the Flies
Don’t Come combines sharp spoken words and riveting beats into
an irrefutable work of art. His music is expansively original, like a
science experiment whose constants are poetry and philosophy. So
the Flies Don’t Come features a crisp cast of guest artists: Myka
9, Elucid, Open Mike Eagle, and Hemlock Ernst a.k.a. Samuel T.
Herring of Future Islands all bring their distinctive talents to the sonic
table.
Interesting breaks create a refreshing cadence in “Souvenir (feat.
Hemlock Ernst),” a stroll through the park that playfully pauses in
thought. Let your soul fly with “Zen Scientist (feat. Myka 9),” and tilt
into the bright light as “Yomilo” wrenches down the beat. A breathless
finale to the album, “Song About a Raygunn (An Ode to Driver)”
sends off the listener with an undeniable burst of energy.
Chill but aware, clever yet inviting – So the Flies Don’t Come is a
skillful showcase for Milo’s articulate wit, expressive warmth, and
gifted production.

Originally released on Sam Records in 1979, ‘Bourgie, Bourgie’ also features background vocals by Ashford & Simpson.
Louie Vega continues to be one of the most dynamic and respected dance music producers in the world. With a body of work that combines his timeless and trend-settings production with Kenny Dope as Masters At Work, and his own distinctive and equally impactful Louie Vega productions, he has always had a great knowledge and respect for the R&B and Disco music that laid the foundation of the current soundtrack of nightlife. The Sam Records catalogue is owned and administered by Nervous Records, with which Louie has a long history, dating to his creation with Kenny Dope of the label’s signature tune, The Nervous Track by Nuyorican Soul. The distinctive string sections of ‘Bourgie, Bourgie’ along with the Ashford & Simpson lyrics caught Louie’s ear, and he has created a remix that has been destroying dancefloors and festival summer.

The Black 80s – Heart To Art
Friday, August 5th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Black 80s – Heart To Art Sonar Kollektiv present Heart To Art the new album from The Black 80’s.
TRACKLISTING:
A1. What You Say Now
A2. Russian Roulette
A3. Trembling
B1. And You Feel Something
B2. Tell Me
C1. Wake Up
C2. Where’s The Money
C3. The Daylight feat. Dominik Marz & Yannick Labbé
D1. To Hang On To
D2. Can You Hear The Music
Everything is just perfect for once. From the ambiguous band name to the cheeky album title and the ten productions at hand everything hits the mark and therewith satisfies the spirit of these times.
The Black 80s come up with probably the best club album by far this year with „Heart To Art“. It’s an album fully equipped with hits designed for the club but also proper songs you want to hear during your workout, in your car, to clean your kitchen to, and so on. „Russian Roulette“, „And You Feel Something“ and „Trembling“ are three of the songs for example you’d don’t want to play in the background for no particular reason. The basslines are too gripping, the vocals by Franck Julien aka Overnite too emphatic and the pressure set up by the tight productions is simply too assertive to resist. If Hollis P. Monroe wasn’t making music for ages (first release in 1997 for Stickman Records), you could almost get the idea that someone internalized the sound of fellow Montreal based Kaytranada totally and intensified it for the club.
The music of Monroe and Julien has precious little to do with the Eighties. Even “Daylight”, together with Hamburg based Yannick Labbé and Augsburg based Dominik Marz, with its perky synth bassline and the jaunty melody sounds much too much of now and here than of anything resembling something from yesteryear. The spoken word track “Where’s The Money” is a masterpiece of reluctance and of a futuristic deepness current club music lacks most of the time. Only “Wake Up” breaks ranks within the ten album tracks. Almost like a summer anthem-like riddim from Jamaica the tune is the most merry of the oeuvre. “Heart To Art” is one of these unusual albums transporting its very own distinctive sound and a incomparable aesthetic. Something you here rarely, but outmost willingly. Available from 16.09.2016

06 Them Who Walk Slow
07 Karibu Tena

11 Jazz Makossa
12 Prison Island
It’s the year 2016 and David Hanke, widely recognized under his moniker
Renegades Of Jazz, is back with his third full-on longplay effort entitled ‘Moyo
Wangu’.
After his conceptual and darker approach to his last album ‘Paradise Lost’
released in 2015, we see Renegades Of Jazz explore the world of Afrofunk
here, a world David Hanke is deeply linked to since he spent an influential part of
his childhood in Arusha/Tanzania in the early 1980s .
Due to being exposed to the sound of this East African metropolis throughout his
early childhood days the love for any kind of African rhythm signatures and vibes
has stuck to this day and is now reflected in the twelve tracks on the album
‘Moyo Wangu’ – a Swahili expression that translates as ‘My heart’ and perfectly
describes where his heart is at.
Already having introduced the audience to his love of all things Afro with the
exclusive non-album track ‘Tempo Tempo’ that was featured on the ‘Hits Agogo
One’ compilation earlier this year as well as with the first single release of the
album ‘Afro Cookie’, a modern Afrofunk anthem with a distinctive twist that does
not only refer to David Hanke’s personal linkage to Africa but also can be seen
as the origin and starting point of the musical journey we’re about to experience
here.
‘Moto Moto’ musically depicts the hot, vibrant feel of a jam-packed dancefloor
throughout an amazing night out, ‘Beneath This African Blue’ brings on sweet
midtempo grooves and the captivating ‘Harambee’ (Let’s work together) reflects
the rhythm and reiterativeness of working together featuring the brass section of
the Los Angeles-based Jungle Fire outfit who add their special heat.
The albums title track ‘Moyo Wangu’ caters uplifting Afrofunk at its best and sees
Marseille-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Hugo Kant delivering some
thrilling flute action with a Jazz-infused twist whilst ‘Them Who Walk Slow’ is on a
more laid back and tropical tip.
With ‘Karibu Tena’ – Swahili for ‘Welcome Back (Again)’ – David Hanke returns
to his spiritual home in a joyful, polyrhythmic way, ‘Zebra Talk’ is another
collaborational effort featuring producer and multi-instrumentalist Kabanjak, also
known for his works on other projects like Deela and as part of the Ancient
Astronauts duo. The touching vibe of ‘Jamboree’ resembles the overwhelming joy
and heartfelt spirit of gatherings and festivities.
‘Majirani Yako Kelele’ works bubbling dancefloors with a complex swing, ‘Jazz
Makossa’ amalgamates influences taken from highly Jazz-infused Makossa
music and their traditional call & response techniques to a thrilling effect and
finally ‘Prison Island’ concludes the album with a sweet yearning and laid back
melancholia referring to the legend and history of a small island, also known as
Changuu or Kibandiko, located only a few miles off shore of the beautiful
Zanzibar Archipelago. Available from 02.09.2016

The Popular People’s Front – EP
Friday, July 8th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Popular People’s Front – EP The wonderful Black Ops sub label from the SLEAZYBEATS people wraps up, which has been a monumentally successful series by anyone’s standards, with an EP from the notorious sample bandits, The Popular People’s Front
Over a decade after launching a distinctive series whose ambitions amounted to no less than condensing thirty years of black club music into a beautifully packaged, portable collage of sonic sample goodness, the SB crew tracked them down & appealed to their anarchic, nihilistic nature by offering them the final release on the label. The PPF project itself came to a close at release No. 10, so the synchronicity was strong
For no other reason than a desire to celebrate dancefloor abandon and strive to soundtrack the purest forms of hedonism, ambiguous sexuality and a transcendent celebration of outsider culture, not to mention a green light to shamelessly exploit, steal and otherwise pilfer their source material, they said yes.
After trying, with no small amount of success to transcend the basic ‘edit’ through the PPF series, the band have again worked their collage approach into three truly magical cuts
As always, this is a limited, vinyl only release. It will not be repressed and will not be released digitally. Not now, not ever.

B2. RISKY Available from 12.08.2016

Daniela Casa – Arte Moderna
Thursday, June 9th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Daniela Casa – Arte Moderna Filed neatly and undisturbed within the micro-genre of 1970’s Italian artsploitation, amongst films soundtracks such as Girl With The Crystal Plumage, A Quiet Place In The Country and House With The Laughing Windows, this obscure library LP is one of the few fully formed concept albums from the recently reappraised discography of Rome’s most versatile and adventurous female production-music composer Daniela Casa. Once destined for a shelf life within the storage rooms of defunct TV studios and educational facilities Daniela’s previously strictly commercially unavailable music has in recent years been given new focus at the hands of open-minded disc detectives and sonic salvage hunters earning Casa’s distinctive feminine take on experimental instrumental mood and movie compositions a place next to her widely respected masculine counterparts such as Alessandro Alessandroni, AR Luciani, Pierro Umiliani, Morricone and Nicolai.
Sharing tight studio space and strict syndication schedules with all of the aforementioned artists (under commission from Romano Di Bari’s fervently independent Flipper music factory) Daniela Casa embraced a liberating wind change in affordable music technology which opened doors for uninhabited solo compositions in home studios taking advantage of communal recording consoles and domestic synthesisers which nurtured a lesser-documented creative family tree (or rather secret society) and paved the way for individualistic projects from the likes of Magnetic System’s Fabio Frizzi and Goblin’s Claudio Simonetti. Here, on this repress of the impossibly rare, one-time subscription-only album, Arte Moderna, we find Daniela at her versatile best creating a wide thematic suite (based on paintings and sculptures in an abstract art gallery) for which she would deploy mostly organic and acoustic instruments to construct a set of unorthodox compositions straddling avant garde, free jazz and Giallo tension (with some brief moments of brooding electronics and italian pop). Veering from her stylistic pop interests (which clearly included a fondness for the music of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin) Daniela Casa’s Arte Moderna saw her adopt a less era specific approach combining neo-classical elements and piano improvisations akin to the likes of France’s Francois Tusques or Burton Greene, or America’s Mal Waldron without compromising her strong narrative personality for this unique abstracted picture music.
Unintentionally but profoundly political in her prolific existence Daniela Casa’s contribution to a predominantly male industry earned her a small clutch of inspired idiosyncratic Italian female bedfellows such as Nora Orlandi, Giullia De Muittis (aka Kema), Fiorella Fratini, Emma De Angelis and Maria Teresa Luciani, who, with faceless anti-celebrity as its essence, never benefitted the wider critical focus that much of this music now duly commands on the collectors circuit. Finders Keepers Records in continued collaboration with the Di Barri company, with the Casa/Ducros family blessing, are now proud to shine new light on this sonic sculptures and provide a fresh context where educated music listeners are ready to fill the gaps between Delia Derbyshire, Ennio Morricone, Suzanne Ciani and Harry Partch and patronise a very welcome considered alternative to the recent rise in popularity of Italian Giallo soundtracks from a seldom savoured feminine creative vantage point. Daniela’s musical paintings can now be unveiled to the public for the first time, with Modern Art sounding as contemporary as it did when it was recorded forty years ago. The gallery is now open for limited sittings, discerning ears and open minds.
